There are two internet phrases I can’t stand and that is a “hot take” and “romanticizing your life.”
But today I will be sharing my hot take on romanticizing your life,
Hot takes just feel like an excuse to be unique. I obviously agree with the “romanticizing your life” movement (remember the zest of life series?), and when someone tells me my newsletter feels like a guide to romanticizing your life, it makes me feel so seen. That’s technically what this newsletter IS about. I guess I just get sick of seeing TikTok’s about it? My job is social media so whenever a trend is going around, I’m seeing it all day, every day. I have no issue with romanticizing my morning coffee, long walks, and applying moisturizer before bed.
For me it’s to get excited about answering looming emails and deadlines. Clocking in at 9am. Paying taxes.
Enter my secret,
I call it Creative Direction. The job of Creative Director is mysterious. It’s important, but often implies the client has a big budget and can afford a creative director. To be a creative director you have to be cool, on the cusp, and have a vision. They have to be problem solvers and innovators. Visionaries and virgos.
When I start to look at any situation like a Creative Director I feel empowered. Here’s how to do it:
Create a setting that makes you feel like you’re living your dream life (I like to think I am already living mine, personally) A setting that you look forward to being in. A stunning desk situation with an expensive, androgenous-smelling candle. Sexy glasses that make you feel like a vogue editor. A planner that you like having around. A space that you enjoy working in.
Find out what you can get out of whatever you need to do. When I was doing an internship in the Virgin Islands and really wanted to come home but couldn’t— I decided that this opportunity was the perfect moment to get into working out every morning, drawing every night, and being consistent with my journal. There weren’t the distractions of home to hold me back in this situation, so I had no other choice than to do my little tasks.
If you have something in your job description that you don’t like.. how can you reframe it? See how it can make you better. Think of it as a challenge to reframe it into something you can enjoy and benefit from. If there’s something I’m putting off I’ll save it until 2 pm, make a second coffee, listen to music that makes me feral, and give myself 10 minutes on Pinterest to envision how I can further create my dream life. Then I remember that completing this task only helps me get closer to my dream life (especially if it’s related to a task at work) and then while I’m feeling magnetic and buzzy, I’ll do the task and actually enjoy it.
Sometimes I just think of like, Carrie Bradshaw typing as I’m typing and that makes whatever I am doing fun.
Cleaning your disastrous house? An opportunity to marvel at your belongings and appreciate your space. A moment to unwind. With the best reward (a clean house)
I just got hit with the most gnarly tax report I’ve ever seen. I was absolutely speechless when I saw what I owed. But then I realized that this is the result of my tripling my income last year. I decided to look at it as a celebration of my success and hard work.1
I feel like you guys probably get it by now. Let’s make life more fun, no matter how you want to phrase it ;)
Here’s the thing, not every moment of life needs to be romanticized or assigned meaning. But it makes life a little more fun, and this newsletter is about having fun.
Now off to pay my taxes!
Xx Chloe
I realize this is a privileged take, and it doesn’t mean I agree with all aspects of Capitalism but a small way to feel more grateful in my life :)
