I am guilty of being the queen of listening to self-help podcasts, reading all the books, making all the lists, and then taking no action. I go in and out of phases where I spend more time thinking about how I can improve or simply enjoy my life even more, and then doing nothing about it.
But I noticed today that a new habit/routine as sticking and bringing me real comfort. I was so relieved— I AM CAPABLE OF MAKING PROGRESS!!!!!!! And it’s inspiring me to slow down, savor, and be present this month. I think that’s the key to productivity and pleasure. A goal can be to call your mom twice as usual, or your goal could even be to let yourself enjoy 30 minutes of social media without judgment.
So here’s what I am doing:
No phone or technology in the bathroom. Just be present in there, no matter what you’re doing. No TikTok in the shower. It’s just so insane to me that I sometimes need that stimulation while I’m cleansing and should be savoring time in the shower.
Buy your favorite coffee and inhale it every morning. Trader Joe’s Maple Coffee for me.
Look in the mirror a little less. I don’t know if you relate but I find myself looking in the mirror more than necessary.
I am someone who tends to hyper-fixate, escape, and obsess. I find myself only listening to my favorite songs in the world, songs I know every word to, and songs that make my Spotify top playlists every year. It does something to my cortisol, which is cool when I need to get pumped up, but I’m craving the idea of listening to music I don’t know, calmly. Just sitting back and allowing my brain to wander and be alone instead of using it as an escape every time.
You might already do all of these things and your list of ways to be more present could be completely different. If you’ll just take a moment to observe how your days are going, your little lists will present themselves to you. Because here’s the thing, we could all benefit from mixing it up a bit.
